Big Island Deep-Sea Fishing
The 2011 Kona fishing tournament season kicks off on June 25. This summer people from all over the world will come to Hawaii’s Big Island with the hope of catching the much sought after Pacific blue marlin. Prizes will be won. Glory will be had. And a lot of monster fish will be reeled in.
The Kona coast has long been a destination for both expert and novice anglers. The blue waters are home to ahi (yellowfin tuna), broadbill swordfish, mahimahi (dolphin fish), and many other species of game fish. The unique topography of the Kona coast makes deep-sea fishing a pleasant experience. Huge mountains protect the ocean from wind, creating calm sailing conditions, and the steep drop-off means an angler can be fishing depths of 6000 feet three miles from the harbor.
The Kona tournament season goes from June until the end of September. Novices should choose tournaments with ‘jungle rules,’ so that the crew of the boat can help bring in the fish. Serious fishermen should look for tournaments with IGFA rules, such as the annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, where anglers compete for world records.
Kohala Ranch
Charter boats can be hired at Honokohau Harbor, north of Kailua-Kona. A variety of different packages are available ranging from serious outings to family fun days. It is also possible to see some of the big fish without leaving the dock. Come by Honokohau Harbor’s Fuel Dock at 11 AM to watch the weigh-in from the morning charters, or at 3:30 PM for the afternoon charters.
